Praying Always

Updated: Jan 9, 2019

WE LIVE AS WE PRAY AND PRAY AS WE LIVE. So we have to PRAY ALL THE TIME.

And we are not making this up. The Word of God asks us to pray and to pray constantly.

“Pray always without becoming weary” (Lk 18, 1). “Be vigilant and praying at all times” (Lk 21, 36). “Pray without ceasing” (Rm 12, 12). “Be persevering in your prayer” (Col 4, 2).

If God asks this of us, it must be for our benefit. And if God asks this, it must be possible, because He gives us the necessary graces to do what He requires.

In order to pray constantly, we should be conscious that God is constantly present in our lives.

But, even so, how can we be praying all the time?

For example, continually repeating one or several phrases from a Psalm, perhaps one that has pierced our heart as a “two-edged sword” (Hb 4,12). Or repeating a short prayer like “Jesus, I trust in You”, or any other one we prefer. Or praying a longer one, like the Our Father o the Hail Mary.

And these repetitions can surely be made while we do something that does not involve our intellect. For instance, while we drive, or while we get dressed, or while we do manual work, from doing dishes to cleaning the house, or while we walk the dog or workout.

In addition to this, there are other moments of prayer during the day: when we ask God for pardon for our sins, or when we offer our daily work, or when we pray for something we need or somebody needs. Or when we stop to praise God or to thank Him for something. Or when we say the Rosary. And, very especially, when we are in Mass.
