Our lives are a journey, a journey full of ups and downs, of left turns and right turns, unexpected walls to climb and unexpected blessings to thank God for. We all know this. But what is our attitude about all this? What should our response be?
Jesus' 7th Word on the Cross and His last word on earth was “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit” (Luke 23: 46). What an amazing life Jesus had while on this earth! A life full of service to His people, to His friends, brothers and sisters. But above all Jesus came to this earth to save us from sin by doing God’s Will. When Jesus said just before “It is finished” (John 19: 30) He meant “My Father, I have done everything you have asked me to do”.
In a natural and logical progression to that train of thought, the next word is the logical next step. Think as if Jesus would have said, And, “since I have done everything you asked me to do, Father, and as the culmination of my life of obedience, I surrender to Your Will once again, and into your hands I commend My Spirit”.
WOW! Can you imagine? After all that suffering, after all the humiliation, after being left alone by all, even His best friends, and knowing that everything was the Father’s Will, He surrenders once again for the last time.
So, when asking yourself… what would Jesus do? This is what He would do: surrender EVERYTHING to our Father, without hesitation and without reservation, EVERYTHING for the Glory of God.
Let us pray:
My Crucified Jesus, I pray that in the moment of my death, the moment of my particular judgement, I can pray like You. That when all my senses shall fail me, when my weary and downcast eyes can no longer look up to You, when my parched lips can no longer kiss Your most sacred wounds, when my cold hands can no longer embrace Your Cross, and when I can no longer speak, remember my prayer today, remember the love that I have for you today. I can only hope that at the end of my time I can humbly say “Father into your hands I commend my soul”, so that I will be peacefully lead home by You to the bosom of my Father to rest in peace forever and ever.
