When we speak of DNA we are talking about Jesus’ genetic structure. Speaking in scientific terms, what is Jesus’ DNA like? Is it just like ours?
Scientifically, there are very interesting things about Jesus, due to the fact that He is true Man and also true God. How does that look in science? What is His DNA like?
Look at this scientific surprise (click here for video): all human beings have in our DNA 46 chromosomes: 23 from our mother, 23 from our father. Of these, 2 chromosomes determine sex: one chromosome X from the mother and one chromosome either X or Y from the father. It so happens that a blood sample believed to be from Jesus, when analyzed, presented only 24 chromosomes, the 23 chromosomes from His Mother and only one chromosome “Y” (which determines his masculine sex). This chromosome “Y” cannot be provided by a human father, simply because human genetics do not work that way. Whether true or not this investigation, the information given can be a scientific way to express that Jesus is truly Man and truly God.
We know that in the Annunciation Mary asked how she would conceive the Son the Angel was announcing, as she was a virgin. And the Archangel Gabriel responded: «The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God »(Luke 1: 35)
When Mary said “Yes”, what is called in Theology the “Hypostatic Union” took place: the humanity of Jesus and the Divinity of God were united. Through this union, the Word, Who before was only God, now also became Man.
Saint John explains this at the beginning of his Gospel: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God … and the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1: 1&14). The Word has always been God. But in a certain moment 2000 years ago, this God Word also became Man, taking the name of Jesus.
Normally, Jesus kept hidden the fact that He was God. But in the Transfiguration He showed some of the glory of His Divinity.
Now, the glory is fruit of grace. Distance aside, something similar takes place in us when we are truly in grace. Grace gradually transforms us, until one day we will be able to enjoy the fullness of glory in Heaven, where Jesus is as true God and true Man.
