Crowning our Queen

Besides being Mother of God -and ours- Mary is Queen. Queen of what? She is Queen of all creation, of everything that has been created: angels, persons, animals, vegetables and minerals.

But … what is the meaning of being Queen? It means that she reigns beside the King. Therefore, she must be seated at His right hand, as was the case of the Queen Mother in the Kingdom of Israel. As Queen, she presents our needs to the King, as she did when there was no more wine in the Cana Wedding.

She knows what we need and she is especially aware of what we require for our eternal salvation. Knowing exactly what God wishes to give us, she therefore knows what to ask her Son for each one of us.

That is what being Queen is all about. The Queen Mother does not compete with her Son, the King. She only intercedes before Him for our needs.

Hence, the Church recognizes Mary as Queen and even encourages the physical crowning of her statues with flowered crowns. The Church has also established a special feast to commemorate the Crowning of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary. Since 1968 this feast is celebrated on August 22, a week after the Feast of the Assumption of Mary to Heaven, since it is presumed that she was crowned as Queen after being in Heaven in glorious body and soul.

The Coronation of Mary was previously celebrated on May 31. On that day, there used to be ceremonies in which beautiful flowered crowns were placed on statues of the Virgin Mary in schools and churches, in towns and cities around the world.

At only two weeks to the end of May, the Month of Mary, let us prepare ourselves to crown her as Queen of our heart. How? Above all, imitating her in following her Son Who she followed and imitated perfectly.

We can also present to her the critical situation of the world today. And let’s also bring to her our spiritual and temporal needs, especially those related to our eternal salvation.

Song ¡Oh Mary! We crown thee:
